Launch Party
We’ve arrived: Our pages come to life
40º74º magazine celebrates
inaugural issue at launch party

April 3 certainly was a night to remember. I must admit I felt a little like Cinderella on her way to the grand ball. It was the evening of our launch party at McLoone’s Pier House in Long Branch, and the moon was shining over the ocean on this early spring evening. The setting and the season couldn’t have been more perfect.

As I walked into the magnificently appointed party space – its ethereal feel enhanced by soft lighting from votive candles, delicate spring flowers and seashells and crystals adorning white-wash tables – I knew the magazine had arrived.

Before me, assembled in one room, were many of the people I had the pleasure of getting to know through the pages of 40º74º.

They were milling about, chatting, toasting each other and the magazine – simply having a wonderful time. Jack Ford (TV host and attorney) and his wife, Dorothy, were with our publisher, Thomas Donovan. Jim Caldwell (diving enthusiast and collector profiled in the launch edition) and his wife, Marion, of Toms River, were engaged in conversation with staff writer Bob Considine and his wife, Christine.

Philanthropist Mary Weir (from our April edition) enjoyed some laughs with the 40º74º staff. Marimbist Leigh Howard Stevens, sans marimba, was sharing stories with other 40º74º alums.

Also in the mix were many of our advertisers who complimented the magazine’s new look. And our logo was a big hit with the crowd.

The evening brought out the best in fashions. In fact, I got some great style tips from Beth McLoone, Karen Irvine of Culinary Creations, Oceanport, and Nancy Byrne, executive director of the New Jersey Office of Travel and Tourism.

The 200 people in attendance raised $2,300 through our silent auction, which benefited The Valerie Fund Children’s Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders at The Children’s Hospital, Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch.

My favorite memory was the unveiling of the 10-by-8-foot replica of our launch edition cover, “View of the World from 40º74º.’’ It was an emotional moment; I shed a tear (honestly, I only had one sip of the 40º74º signature cocktail).

I even made it home before the stroke of midnight. Coincidentally, I did walk out of one of my slippers on the way downstairs. For a moment, my satin slipper had turned into glass.
